Construction Begins at Blatchford

The City of Edmonton is breaking ground on one of the world’s largest sustainable communities.

Starting on August 8, construction began on the first phase of residential development and a section of the central park. Once the site grading and excavation for the first stormwater pond is complete, the City will begin installation of underground utilities.

“City Council has set ambitious goals for this community, and the start of construction is a significant milestone towards achieving their vision for Blatchford,” says Mark Hall, Executive Director, Blatchford Redevelopment project. “We have an immense opportunity to not only build one of the most environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods in the world, but to also build a community that allows people to live their lives differently.”

From community gardens to energy-efficient green buildings to custom designed streets for walking and cycling, the City of Edmonton is committed to making this community into a leading-edge development. By incorporating new and developing technologies and best practices from around the world into the development, Blatchford will help redefine healthy community design.

Removal and recycling of buildings continues on the site.

In September, administration will take a proposal for a district energy system to City Council. This innovative system has the potential to provide high-efficiency heating, cooling and hot water for all the buildings in Blatchford. By incorporating other green technologies like solar and geothermal, the proposed system supports Council’s vision for a community that uses renewable energy and is carbon neutral.

The first residents could be living in Blatchford as early as 2016/2017.
