Blatchford District Energy Sharing System Wins Two National Awards!

In partnership with Associated Engineering, we are thrilled to announce the Blatchford District Energy Sharing System recently won two Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards! The awards are recognized as the industry’s highest honours, offered only to the most remarkable engineering feats featured in projects by Canadian firms.

The Blatchford project is one of just twenty projects submitted from across Canada that was selected for an Award of Excellence. The project was also honoured with the Tree for Life Award, which is a Special Achievement Award presented to a project that showcases commitment to the environment and outstanding environmental stewardship.

The jury was impressed with the team’s repurposing of an already urbanized airport, allowing for the growth of communities without increasing urban sprawl. Deemed the neighborhood of the future by the jury, this modular and scalable project sets out a vision for what urban living will be for Canadians.

“This project is really important because it shows how you create innovative, sustainable communities. It’s also showing how we can come up with new energy systems to create communities that are resilient and sustainable and liveable,” said Jennifer Drake, Associate Professor, Carleton University and Jury Chair for the awards.

Check out the video below to hear what else the Jury Chair had to say about Blatchford and the Tree for Life Award.

“The Blatchford Neighbourhood exemplifies a community of the future, today, in Edmonton. Blatchford’s residents enjoy a sustainable lifestyle, with the amenities to live, work and play in this carbon-neutral neighbourhood, powered by renewable energy,” said Owen Mierke, Manager, Community Infrastructure with Associated Engineering.

We are very proud of the hard work and collaboration that has gone into this project, including the efforts from Associated Engineering as well as from our City of Edmonton colleagues across the organization, and we look forward to sharing more good news with you as the project grows. Thank you again to the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer for recognizing the Blatchford project and congratulations to all of the other winners!
